Chapter 12

The first streaks of dawn filtered through the windows of the hospital room, painting the world in soft hues of peach and gold. The usual peaceful stillness of the morning was punctuated by the quiet movements of Aurora, a solitary figure lost in her thoughts.

Aurora, still dressed in her clothes from the previous day, bore the telltale signs of a sleepless night - shadowed eyes, disheveled hair, and a weary set to her shoulders. However, beneath her exhaustion was a resolute determination that shone clear in her eyes.

After receiving the doctor's approval, Aurora eagerly brought Jackie back to her place.

The guest room had been transformed into a makeshift infirmary, with Jackie at its center, slumbering peacefully. Every few minutes, Aurora would glance over her shoulder, checking on Jackie. There was a constancy in her concern, a silent testament to her growing feelings.

The early morning found her by Jackie's side, meticulously tending to her. She was careful as she changed the bandages, her touch light and sure, a silent promise woven into the sterile gauze and the antiseptic smell. She adjusted the pillows for Jackie's comfort, a soothing gesture that went beyond her duty.

With a heavy sigh, Aurora headed towards the kitchen. The act was ordinary, yet held a certain poignancy. She moved with purpose, gathering ingredients and utensils with a familiarity that surprised even her.

A scrap of paper caught her eye – a recipe written in Jackie’s clear handwriting. A small smile tugged at her lips as she looked at it. It was a simple, hearty breakfast recipe, something Jackie would have made on any given day. Today, she would make it for Jackie.

The preparation was meticulous, Aurora's attention to detail echoing in the careful slices of vegetables, the exact measurements of ingredients, and the attention to the cooking time. The simmering pots and pans filled the kitchen with a comforting aroma, a tangible echo of her longing to provide solace and care.

As she set the table, placing the dishes carefully and pouring fresh juice, her actions exuded more than just obligation or duty. There was a softness in her movements, a tenderness in her gaze that was far removed from the fear and uncertainty of the previous night. It was more intimate, more personal, a poignant indication of the shift in their dynamic.

As Aurora entered the room, breakfast tray in her hands, Jackie was already awake, sitting upright with a grimace. The bandage around her shoulder was a stark reminder of her vulnerability, an unfamiliar notion to the seasoned warrior.

"I can manage myself," Jackie's voice carried the tone of mild annoyance. Despite the throbbing pain, she tried to reach for the glass of water on the table, her hand faltering mid-air.

But Aurora was quick to intervene, her hand steady as she held the glass to Jackie's lips. Her voice was firm, yet gentle, "Right now, you need to rest and heal. Let me help."

Jackie's curt nod was her acquiescence, but her unease was palpable. She was a fortress of strength, not accustomed to the feeling of being cared for.
